After 43 years of no activity , Calbuco volcano in Chile has erupted sending a giant ash of cloud into the sky. Activity is ongoing and there are several adjacent towns affected. The Volcano is 108 kilometers from Bariloche and even closer to Puerto Montt. Ash is affecting this mentioned towns and the Villa La Angostura, San Martín de los Andes lakes and ski resort areas. All flights are cancelled in Bariloche today and in nearby airports. Cancellations are even affecting the Buenos Aires airports as the ash is supposed to drift by Buenos Aires.
There is no clarity as to how it will affect this ski season as it is too early to tell. Ski resoirts are set to open in mid June.
A massive eruption of the Puyehue Volcano in the Chilean side of the Andes has caused ash clouds to affect nearby towns. Town most affected currently is Villa LaAngostura famous for Cerro Bayo resort which is going through a massive clean up of volcanic ash causing disruption of services. So far there is no idea whether it will affect 2011 ski season. The volcanic ash has travelled as far as Buenos Aires and even New Zealand and Asutralia where many flights were forced to be cancelled.
